Back to normal...if you can call my life normal

Well, we are trying to get back into a more normal routine since my tour guide days are over. (Actually, I'm quite sad about that!) This weekend we will be doing yard work instead of swimming with turtles...hello, what is wrong with that picture!?! Kari and Justin left on Tuesday, and the girls have still not recovered, they are missing them terribly. I am trying to catch up on laundry, photo work, and oh yeah, managed to squeeze in a town hall meeting with the Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. They were in Fallujah earlier this week...our friend Dustin Nelson ran into them at the gym in Iraq...too funny. Anyway, they are on their base tour and came by to chat with those of us in Hawaii. They updated us on what is actually going on on the ground in Iraq and why Marines will be heading back into Afghanistan. I trust his update a heck of a lot more than what I see on CNN or FOX News. For all of my military friends, he (and his wife) discussed how he had been fighting for funding for military families and that we will be working towards a 7 months gone, 7 months home rotation. He also said that we were in for the long haul and that what we are experiencing now will become the norm. The MOS's like MP"S (which Kevin is) will also be facing deployments like the field Marines because the garrison force will be depleted. I am not looking forward to this! But it was great to hear him speak and to have face to face time with the men who are at the Pentagon setting policies that impact our Marines and families. They also went to PMO (the police department) and were asking questions about work and life in general. Kevin said they were very genuine and interested in what he and the other Marines had to say. Shoot, with my brief sighting and snorkeling adventure with Obama here in Hawaii, my briefing with the Commandant...my political aspirations are growing...is that Capital Hill I hear calling my name...HA..."Just kidding"!
Anyway, we are settling in and getting ready for the fall...if you can call it that in Hawaii. There will surely be no leaves turning or cooler weather coming our way, but we will have pumpkins out nonetheless. I have a feeling Santa will be in a speedo/bikini this year...on the other hand, that may scare the children, so maybe board shorts and tank top will suffice. :-0

Aloha

Of course, Santa does come to visit the islands before Christmas. He arrives by one of those racing paddles boats that kind of look like dragons and he is indeed in board shorts! He comes to the hotel in Waikiki that has Duke's... Fun photo op!
I didn't know you saw Obama...!

Girl, what a wild August you've had! The only thing I can write home about is that the Gaskin Girls are taking a sabatical from dance this year. What? Not having to go 3 thousand places after school each week? Let me tell ya, I am lovin' IT! We think of you guys often. Take Care,
Love Meredith
